BUFC 1st Vets

Match Report: 15/03/2008
British United 5 - AVIA FC 1 (4-1)

By Sean Nevin

Team: Lees, Ljung, Nevin, Mullholland (Capt), Martinello, Zahr, Murray, Dixson, Swartjes, Peckham, Cain

Sub: Bajraktari
Suspended: Egerton
Injured/Retired/Crowd: Poissonier

The final league game and only 12 men to choose from, Captain Gerry Mulholland, selected the team above to try and finish a frustrating season on a winning note. Gerry sent the team out with a straight forward message that defeat was not an option and there could be no excuses!!! It wasn't quite that polite, but the team understood his point.

A frustrating first 20 minutes saw the home side totally dominate the opposition but fail to find the vital pass that would unlock the stubborn defence of Avia.

Finally, a flowing move that saw the ball moved from defence through the midfield and delivered into the penalty box by Willy Swarjtes found Jason Peckham who slid the ball homee from close range (1-0). This seemed to settle the home side and, at last, they started to control the game with ease. Within 10 minutes the score had been increased to (2-0) as Willy Swarjtes increased the lead with a powerful shot from just inside the penalty box. Just before half time, BUFC relaxed and let the opposition into their half for a sustained period. A corner kick to AVIA resulted in a free header that was partially cleared only for the AVIA left winger to return the ball from wide. It was more of a cross than a shot but still managed to loop over the hapless Dave Lees and into the top corner of the net (2-1).

Half Time 2-1

Half time - Dave Lees in goal had only touched the ball about 5 times, the last one being to pick it out of the net. A frustrated Gerry Cain let the team know that he wanted more of the ball. The message from the gaffer was that he expected us to improve and win the game comfortably. Again, his words were not as eloquent as that, but nevertheless understood by all.

The second half continued with BUFC completely dominating proceedings. After 10 minutes of the re-start, Zahr was replaced by Bajraktari who was returning after several weeks out with cracked ribs (caused by Gerry Mullholland and Dave Lees telling him jokes after a night in the Pub). It wasn't long before the home team increased their lead. A quality ball from Ljung at the back released Gerry Cain who rounded the keeper at smashed the ball into the back of the net (3-1). Following sterling work down the left hand side by Martinello and Swartjes, the ball arrived at the feet of Gerry Cain who provided a cool finish (4-1). He tried hard in the last 5 minutes, but Gerry Cain couldn't manage to finish the season with a hat-trick.

Full Time 4-1

In summary, a comfortable victory for BUFC that sees them in mid table after a frustrating season. Having lost several games by the odd goal and been subjected to some disgraceful refereeing decisions, it could and should have been a comfortable top 4 finish.

Man of the Match: Willy Swarjtes
