Match Report: 15/09/2007
British United 1 - LA LORGNETTE FC (4-0)

By Karl Telfer

Captain Allen decided to tinker with the line-up for this week's match against La Lorgnette after last week's drubbing by FC Ireland, opting for a 3-4-1-2 formation. There were also some changes of personnel: Kieran returned to his true home at the centre of defence in Lee's absence, with James coming in at right-back to replace Dean, who was allegedly still suffering from the after-effects of a dead leg. Gonzo had his first start of the season at right midfield and Alex partnered Juri up front.

Despite some late arrivals and a non-existent warm-up, BUFC started the game brightly. The home team dominated possession and territory, linking up well in midfield and down the two flanks. Juri displayed some Heskeyesque touches, skilfully holding up the ball for Alex and Miguel, while Gonzo showed some promise down the right. BUFC kept their shape well, with good support from midfield to the three donkeys at the back. Thomas covered a lot of ground and snuffed out attacks down the left.

Meanwhile, back in the opposition penalty area, the crosses and shots came thick and fast but as was the case two weeks ago, scoring didn't come easily. La Lorgnette were only strong when they broke in numbers from midfield. Their best player slipped through BUFC's tight defensive net at one point and grazed our bar with a good shot. The threat was neutralized though when Marek was given the job of shadowing the playmaker, not giving him a sniff for the rest of the game.

Half-time: 0-0

The second half started as the first half had ended, with the home side on top. They had to wait another quarter of an hour though before breaking the deadlock. For some inexplicable reason, twinkle toes Kelly found himself on the edge of the opposition area with the ball, he skipped past a couple of players and was then (very easily) brought down. Miguel stepped up and, with the deftest of touches, chipped a gem into the top left-hand corner. 1-0. After this, the flood gates opened.

Three more goals followed as BUFC continued to pile on the pressure and La Lorgnette threw in the towel. Answers on a postcard for the scorer of the second, sorry I can't remember - probably Alex. Miguel (I think) coolly slotted home the third in the bottom left-hand corner after a counter-attack and Marek finished off, tapping in the fourth after their keeper had parried a good shot from James.

The only other noteworthy incident of the half came after the introduction of Kevin for Gonzo. After attempting to control on his chest, Kevin then ran half way across the pitch to retrieve the ball and collided with their playmaker. A hard but fair tackle. However, Captain Allen was also lurking with intent and their guy ended up on the floor, complaining of a broken rib. The situation threatened to turn nasty but the hypersensitive ref managed to cool tempers down, Kevin apologized and BUFC romped home.

Thanks also for good support from the sidelines from Dean, Bram, Antonio, Mike and sons.
